Organic Beer Reviews
Happy St. Patrick's Month—the most wonderful month of the year. With parades in New York City, Hoboken, Pearl River, Seaside, and Belmar, you can't help but knock back a few brews. If you're tying one on, you may as well do it organically.

Healthy Living NYC Staff Review

March 5, 2007

At Healthy Living, we enjoy a good frosty brew as much as anyone. But if you're going to drink, you may as well do it in the healthiest way possible. You could start with moderation, but that's no fun. The much more entertaining avenue to lower your chemical intake would be to drink organic beer. These are a few of our favorite organic beers on the market.

Pinkus Organic Hefe-Weizen
Origin: Münster, Germany
Style: Bavarian Wheat Beer
ABV: 5.1%
Certifications: Organic, Vegan (Isn't all beer vegan?)

A quality product from Northern Germany since 1816, this family-run brewery is the first to use only organically grown barley malt and whole hop blossoms. It shares the cloudy golden appearance of traditional wheat beers, as well as the traditional tartness that carries throughout the flavor. Generally served with a slice of lemon, the citrus helps to bolster the already fruity undertones. Light and lively, this beer does well to compliment light meals, while the citrus helps to cut spicier meats like sausage, hot links, or pepperoni. USDA certified organic, Pinkus Muller’s hef is available in 17oz bottles. Imported exclusively by Merchant du Vin. merchantduvin.com

Samuel Smith’s Organically Produced Lager
Origin: Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, England
Style: European Pale Lager
ABV: 5.0%
Certifications: Organic, Vegan

This amber lager stems from the oldest brewery in Yorkshire, standing strong and independent from the large bottling conglomerates since 1758. The complex flavor does well to combine rich malty characteristics with ever so slight fruity undertones and a sweet, but dry finish. Citrus hints round out the crisp nose. Served as a perfect compliment to lighter chicken, fish, and vegetarian dishes. The Organic Lager is USDA certified organic, and in fact, all Samuel Smith beers are vegan products, registered with The Vegan Society. Available in 550ml Victorian Pint bottles (18.7oz), or standard American 12oz bottles. Imported exclusively by Merchant du Vin since 1978. merchantduvin.com
