Editorial Review

Being a patron of NY’s spa scene can be a bit daunting. Exceedingly over-priced, decadently-labeled treatments frequently end up meager and disappointing. Why pay all that money for treatments that could be done at home for a fraction at the price. When will spa owners deliver their promises at a fair price so that we can enjoy the benefits of spa therapies without the bitterness?

Enter Graceful Spa. Hands down the best massage I have ever had. And, get this, also the cheapest!

The spa has already won many customer accolades, and to my surprise the treatment lived up to the hype. I paid a visit to the downtown sister spa of the original Graceful Services located on the Upper East Side.

The spa’s focus is massage, although the downtown location also offers a few facial and body scrub treatments. The environment is clean and sparse. Each massage station is divided with white curtains (not separate rooms), and though it is possible to hear a neighboring therapist’s whisper, you’ll be too relaxed to hear a thing.

I chose the 90 minute massage. Why? The price, at $110, was less than what some spas charge for 60 minutes, and because I had always wondered if those extra 30 minutes actually made a difference. It’s worth the upgrade. More attention was paid to my ailing neck, and instead of worrying that the timer would go off, I was able to truly relax.

The Graceful Massage is a mix between “traditional Qi-Gong, Tui-Na, and Deep Tissue blended with Swedish and Shiatsu techniques.” My masseuse made use of the bar on the ceiling to steadily walk on my back, and delivered much of the massage from atop the massage table, using her whole body to apply just the right amount of pressure. The massage was intermittently stopped as heated towels were rubbed over massaged areas. At the end of the treatment my therapist graciously brought over cup of cold water (a caring post-massage gesture often absent from spas in the city).

Feeling like I finally got what I paid for, I was able to appreciate the healing effects of massage without regret. The benefits of human touch, the release of tension and negative energy rapidly improved a number of physical complaints while putting me in a relaxed and positive state of mind for days.

One-hour massage is $80, though can be less (around $60) depending on seasonal specials. A 2-hour summer pampering special runs about $120. I booked the massage only four hours prior to coming in for the treatment. Overall, highly recommended.
