Editorial Review

Ohm Spa walks the fine line between stylish New York spa, catering to overworked and overpartied city folk, and focused healing center rooted in quality service.

While its candle-lit sky blue atmosphere is akin to what you will find at most new and cozy sized spas, unlike these spas Ohm delivers a slightly more polished feel. Taking heed not to leave any corner of the space unattended to (oftentimes smaller spas overlook details in presentation), Ohm exceeded my expectations while still providing that coddled and personal feel. The relaxation corner: displayed bunches of fresh grapes, fruit-infused waters, and meticulously selected furnishings; and the airy treatment rooms mindfully decorated to accommodate both patronís comfort and therapistís needs.

The spa's director and owner, a licensed physical therapist, emphasizes the quality of their therapeutic massages, not simply "fluff and buff" therapies. With this in mind, I signed up for the 60-minute custom massage, flowing between various techniques (myofascial release, trigger point release, strain-counter strain therapy, passive stretching), many of which focus on promoting the bodyís natural release of tension and tightness without pain or force

The massage was gentle and overall affective at relieving my upper back and shoulders from the grind of daily backpack stress. My therapist continuously invited my feedback, thus I felt quite connected to each one of her movements. Before beginning her focus on a new area, she gently placed her hands on the part to be treated and paused, as if asking permission from my body to proceed. She noticeably built trust with my body and it in effect responded to her manipulations with greater ease. The stretching element was delightful and I immediately noticed the benefits of the deeper massage, permitted only once my muscles were warm and open.

Unlike its spa kin, Ohm takes its nail therapy services quite seriously. Men and women clients visit weekly for nail services and are quick to rave about the results. The menu of available add-on treatments is pretty long- you can extend your hand/foot massage, add aromatherapy, or even repair ravaged cuticles. The spa loves to boast about its iJoy pedicure massage chairs (straight from Sharper Image) and plasma TV screens, indeed bonuses to the more importantly solid-manicure and pedicure skills.

Now, the only shortcoming: Ohm Spa is on the expensive side, though you get what you pay for. Is it the place to spoil yourself or a loved one? Yes, indeed. But it unfortunately may not be the weekly fix some of us need.

If pampering funds are low: Try the target therapy massage for 30 min ($59, add-on 15 min passive stretching for $15), the 30 minute facial on the 30th of every month ($30), or M-W enjoy a complimentary manicure with pedicure service.

1 hr. massage ($105+); 1 hr. custom facial ($99); 30 min. manicure ($25); 45 min pedicure ($45).
