Editorial Review
Chill, but in that angst-ridden, East Village sort of way. When the waiter's feathers get ruffled, you're not quite sure if he rolls those feathers up and smokes 'em, or he curls up into a ball in the corner and rocks to the gentle melodies of Wilco. Judging by the large, black, straight-edge-denoting X's on the hands of the super hip Euro-youth sitting next to us—who remained laughing and bright-eyed despite being pierced and tatted within an inch of their lives—maybe there is a happy medium living in the East Village. And maybe it lives in Kate's Joint. After all, the décor was homey and hip in the we-don't-even-care sense of the word, but service was still quick, attentive, and courteous. Robert Plant would be proud to know that Zeppelin graced the airwaves for our entire meal.
We started out with a heaping plate of Nachos Grande! (exclamation a la Kate). Very tasty, house-prepared chips were topped with healthy portions of black beans, veggie chili, salsa, shredded lettuce, soy cheese, and non-dairy sour cream ($7.95). You can opt for traditional cheese and sour cream, but to be honest, I'd go for the non-dairy whether you're vegan or not. It was rich and creamy, without the oil and residue you expect from melted cheese and sour cream, enabling us to clean the plate without having to lick it. And don't think I wouldn't have.
For lunch, I went with the McKate ($9.95). As soon as I saw those two un-beef patties with special sauce and non-dairy cheese, I couldn't refuse. For all I do to stay in the counterculture, and having been skeeved out of that other McBurger place (especially following the recent news that two CEOs have died of serious health problems in the last three months), i couldn't resist feeling like I was part of a commercial. Like the health-conscious Michael Jordan—only shorter, and not talented at all. The un-burger was tasty, and though I'm not sure what was in the special sauce, it was definitely pretty healthy. The accompanying fries were also very good, but were traditionally deep-fried.
My friend opted for the breakfast special for the day—an omelet with peppers, onions, and soy cheese. Definitely tasty and not as oily as omelets tend to be in this type of setting. Well-seasoned hash browns, and a nice focaccia toast rounded out the meal. Overall, he was pleased with the taste, but felt the omelet was a little too small. Of course, portion control can be a plus for some, but for a guy on a fairly rigorous workout routine, he was looking for a little more protein. He ended up picking at my fries—so in the end, the portion control took him away from his high-protein diet, and sent him carb-loading down a shame spiral.
Overall, Kate's Joint served up good food with a cool atmosphere and a hip, friendly staff. This place couldn't be more East Village if it tried. But then again, if they tried, it wouldn't be very East Village of them, now would it? |
