Editorial Review
Call me finicky, but I’m one of those people who likes to know what I’m eating. Energy Kitchen is one of the only places I’ve seen to prominently display the nutrition facts for their entire menu, and I’d have to say—not too shabby. They feature a mix of global cuisines in a high protein menu completely devoid of beef. So how do they achieve a low-carb, low-fat, high-protein menu without beef? Energy Kitchen substitutes some interesting alternatives like Ostrich and Bison—leaner meats that don’t sacrifice any of the benefits you seek after your workout. And of course, throwing the deep fryer out of the kitchen doesn’t hurt. Everything at Energy Kitchen is baked, grilled, or steamed—never fried.
It’s tough to walk into Energy Kitchen and not try a new and exciting take on some American classics. And what can be more American than a taste of Yellowstone? So I ordered the Bison Burger ($6.50), served with lettuce and tomato on a whole-wheat bun. Sure the bison is lean, but does that come at a sacrifice to taste? Certainly not—in fact, you’ll find quite the opposite. Because you’re starting with an already lean meat like bison, you don’t have to request your meal to be burnt to a crisp in hopes of eliminating the fat. Feel guilt-free in ordering your burger medium, and retain that true burger flavor. We’ll leave the hockey pucks to the Rangers.
The Northern Italian Platter ($8.95) is another winner. Two chicken breasts topped with spinach and low fat mozzarella. You can’t go wrong. It was moist, with a terrific combination of flavors. Add sides of black beans and veggie chili (other veggie sides available), and you’ve got one protein packed power meal.
But here’s the best part, and I’ll say this slowly—you can actually get a satisfying bite to eat for $6! In Manhattan! Really! And while the food comes out fast, it’s hardly fast food—always cooked to order, never prepared in advance. You’ll find a plethora of ingredients, even for the veggie palate, as Tofu can be substituted for the meats in any dish. Friendly service rounds out The Energy Kitchen as a great place to grab a lunch on the go. Like most quick New York eateries, seating is limited in their clean, if slightly generic dining room. But your surroundings are inconsequential—it’s what’s in your food that counts. When you’re serious about working out naturally, who wants to eat food that’s on steroids? |
