Editorial Review

Are you running low on energy, but not looking to go big on calories? Need to grab a fast meal that won’t weigh you down? Recharge Grill might be just what you’re looking for. New to the Upper East Side, Recharge Juice Bar and Grill has stepped onto the scene with a very good variety of healthy foods for the person on the go. Serving lean meats like bison and ostrich in place of the fattier (and mad cowier) beef, and low carb, whole wheat wraps and pitas, Recharge Grill puts their own spin on a growing genre of popular restaurants that values top quality ingredients, but also your time and dollar value.

While they may not have been the first to come up with the concept of healthy meals on the go, they bring an important new element to the table, which can be strangely absent at their competitors—flavor. The problem is that many of the fast health food restaurants in the city take the concept a step too far. Now, I’m a fan of places like The Pump, but the food can be a little bland, and I swear you can taste the protein powder in every bite. Now, that’s great if you’re looking to go out and bench press Buicks, but not everyone is a power-lifter. Sometimes you just want a quick, tasty meal that will fill you up and won’t bog you down. Recharge Grill does an excellent job of finding that middle ground and sticking to it.

The menu consists of some interesting choices, like the Havana Wrap ($7)—grilled chicken, avocado, brown rice, chili sauce, lettuce, and tomato served on a whole wheat wrap with salad on the side. And I highly recommend the Chicken Parm Wrap ($7), which is filled to the brim with juicy chicken, thick melted low-fat mozzarella, and a perfectly tangy low-sodium marinara. It tastes just like a chicken parm hero that you’d get at an Italian deli, but without all of the carbs in the hero roll.

One thing you can be sure of, there’s no skimping on portions. Wraps and sandwiches may be low in carbs, but they’re high in satisfaction. If you order a wrap, it won’t be filled with lettuce, it’s going to be stuffed full of hearty goodness. However, the lean meats and low-fat ingredients won’t leave you feeling sluggish, no matter how full you are.

With an extensive menu that spans from egg white breakfasts and low carb sandwiches, to larger lunch and dinner platters, you can stop by for any meal of the day. If you’ve ever felt guilty about grabbing that late night pizza, come in and grab a slice of low carb pizza. Just be sure you grab your midnight slice a few minutes before midnight as they close at 12am Monday through Thrusday, 10pm Friday through Sunday.

All meals are prepared fresh for your order, and you can tell that they make it a point to use only the freshest ingredients. The wraps are moist and light, veggies are crisp, and the meats are juicy, as if they were all brought in just for your meal. Plus they have a great assortment of 8 fresh squeezed juice cocktails and about 15 delicious fruit smoothies. Even made to order, they still managed to bring my food, start to finish, in just a few minutes.

Fast doesn’t have to mean fat anymore, and at the Recharge Grill it also doesn’t have to mean rude. The employees were all very cool, and everyone greeted me with a smile. Genuine smiles too—not like the fake plastic smiles in typical fast food joints that come from Ronald and the Hamburglar hitting their 16-year-old employees with a cattle prod each time they give you attitude. The staff was helpful and friendly not because it was their job, but because they were actually nice people.

So, if you’re interested in checking out the growing trend of fast food fitness restaurants, Recharge Grill is a good place to start. You’ll get exactly what your body needs without sacrificing on taste or portion, and without spending a whole paycheck to get it. And then if you want to start bench pressing Buicks, you’re on your own.
