Editorial Review
New York can be a beautiful place—especially on T.V. If you're watching from Timbuktu, it seems rather commonplace that Rachel, Joey, and the rest of the Friends could rent their enormous penthouse apartments on the shaky income of aspiring actors and museum curators. Then you move here and realize you're living in an apartment that requires you to open your bathroom door to look in the fridge, which you have to unplug to use the toaster, which sits on your window sill in front of the brick wall that encompasses your view. Their friends sit in a posh coffee house on plush velvet couches. My friends chase rats down 110th street. Maybe I need some new friends.
But if you've seen the show, you know Rachel and Monica didn't get those bodies sitting on the couch, arguing over their cafe lattes. They must be working out somewhere, it must be ridiculously nice, and we're pretty sure we know where it is. If you live around Union Square, check out Clay—this is a spot that would make even Ross and the gang green with envy. Clay fitness club and spa provide a terrific combination of services, with a small community feel, and facilities that will make you forget all about your ratty apartment. Who needs a penthouse with a view when you can workout at Clay?
Right out of the pages of Interior Design Magazine (check their Nov. 2002 issue), Clay is an architectural marvel combining form and function in a way few gyms do. With over 40,000 square feet, nothing is cramped, but not an inch is wasted. They maintain plenty of open space, with large skylights, and a window view running the length of their impressively equipped gym. You can pump out your sets on new free weights, up to date Cybex machines, and beautiful Pilates Cadillacs, all while watching the bustling city below. But don't worry, while the people push past each other on 14th Street, you'll never have to fight for a spot on the machines or in your favorite classes. Clay limits their membership to a comfortable number. And while this is great for members—no post-work rush, no waitlists for the elliptical machine—you could spend a good stint on the waitlist just to become a member.
Once you’re in though, you’ll never want to leave. You might just hang out on the roof, get some sun and shot pool. Or maybe you’ll camp out on a leather couch in the member’s lounge, kicking your feet up on a furry ottoman while looking for a good lunch spot on the free internet. But why not just hang out and grab lunch at the organic café? Grass-fed Beef Burger suit your taste, or does the Grilled Vegetarian Panini sound better? All certified organic, all guilt free (unless of course you forget to work out).
But if you do remember, there are plenty of group yoga, Pilates mat, and flexibility classes to join. Even the most serious cyclist will find spinning classes they can clip their shoes into. Private Pilates, Gyrotonic®, and personal training featuring Clay’s own MAT (Muscle Activation Technique) are taught by only the best trainers in Manhattan. A full service spa and onsite nutritionist only round out the scene. From the refreshing smell of mint and eucalyptus on the workout towels, to the crackle of the fireplace in the lobby, Clay provides all the nice little touches a top-notch fitness center should have. So sign up, the waiting list is worth it. And if you run into Joey while you’re there, ask him whatever happened to his duck?
