As I came upon the Juvenex Spa, let’s just say I was a bit skeptical. There was no traditional storefront, just a banner for an Asian/European-inspired spa hanging above the doorway of a nondescript building. A five floor-ride in a tiny, rickety elevator only added to my concerns, but then, to my delight, the doors opened onto a totally unexpected world.
I was greeted with the soothing sounds of nature, as chirping birds and flowing water surrounded me. Teak benches and a wooden path leading to the heart of the spa contributed to the setting’s very warm and natural feel. Typically, the more elegant the spa, the more stuffy and sterile the lobby is. So frequenting spas, as I do, it was a welcoming and refreshing change to be in a lobby with such a natural and earthy feel. I simply sat back and took in the pond as I waited for my services to begin.
I had chosen the Basic Purification Program ($115) on the Juvenex Spa web site and was eagerly anticipating the start of my spa experience. The treatment began with the Juvenex Jade Journey, which is available separately, but came as part of the purification package. My Jade Journey began as I entered their baked clay tranquility room, took a towel, and sat on the warm, heated floor. It was a wonderful way to clear my head of the city and meditate.
With my mind cleansed, I did the same for my body, taking a warm shower before entering the Jade Igloo Sauna. This beautiful structure, built with over 20 tons of semiprecious jade, is the most impressive sauna you’ll find in the city. The large round stones form a spacious dome around another circle of teak benches. Just sitting and relaxing was quite a cathartic experience, but I wouldn’t rest your back on the stones without testing the temperature first—they can be quite hot.
I then cooled off in one of the three Japanese Style Soaking Tubs, beautifully designed with small blue mosaic tiles. The warm water contains a mixture of skin and body nourishing herbs, including immune boosting noni and neem, and natural antiseptic tea tree oil. The smell of floating lemons, and the invigorating feel of ginseng added to this freeing experience.
Their Diamond Herbal Steam Sauna was a truly unique experience. Completely encased in glass, wooden benches and heavy steam surround you in this interesting sauna. The steam can be overwhelming, so you may not be able to stay in too long, but all it took was a few minutes, and I could feel my pores opening and my sinuses clearing as I sat and let the steam engulf my body.
The Jade Journey was just the beginning of my spa experience. What followed next was one of the best spa services I’ve encountered, the Invigorating Korean Salt Scrub. This vigorous scrub was done by one of the juvenex employees who used just the right intensity to stimulate the skin without hurting it. As they tend to your skin with a passion—splash!—you are suddenly cleansed with a bowl of warm, refreshing water. This was a very nice touch. I continued to relax, as a nice cooling facial cleanser was applied, cleaned off, and replaced by fresh cucumbers, which covered my entire face. After the scrub and cleansing was complete, they washed and conditioned my hair.
Again, I found this all very freeing, especially as you have the choice to experience the entire journey in the nude. Between 6 am and 7 pm, Juvenex is a women-only spa, completely staffed by other women. Of course, you can choose to wear a bathing suit throughout the process, but the whole experience—the sites, the smells, the feels—has a very natural air about it, and being able to be enjoy the freedom of your own body is part of that. But enjoy it while it lasts, after 7pm, couples services are offered, and bathing suits are required.
When the service was finished, I took the short walk to a long, hot shower. Finally, I dried off, put on my complimentary robe and massaging slippers, and relaxed again in the baked clay room, where I was served tea with an accompaniment of fresh pineapple and melon. It was cool and refreshing way to end my stay at this unique spa.
That day and for a few more that followed, my skin felt completely rejuvenated from the scrub and the other amenities. I felt mentally and physically cleansed. My muscles were relaxed and my mind was freed. Juvenex has done a great job of crafting a wonderful environment and terrific services, while paying attention to even the most minute details of luxury. It was the ultimate spa experience. |

The customer service, is beyond expectations, and only made my experience more enjoyable. The therapists had such an amazing touch, they really left me in awe. I would highly recommend this spa, because there are no words for what I experienced. :o)
