Editorial Review
Meat hanging in the windows, . If it wasn't for the steady stream of people flowing in and out of Citarella, you might mistake it for any number of Manhattan's specialty shops. But once you walk inside, there's no mistaking it. My first experience with Citarella was truly a feast for my senses. The first counter as you walk in their Upper West Side location, their prepared food, stretches the length of the market. Seasoned poached salmon steaks, sauteed soft shell crab, shrimp with mango salsa—my mouth waters just thinking about the aroma of sweetly spiced, smoked seafood wafting in the air. As if my ravishing good looks and keen fashion sense weren't Achilles heel enough, Citarella had to add quality shellfish to the list.
If the fruits of the sea don't whet your palate, there's plenty more to marvel at. Thirty varieties of pastas, raviolis, and tortellinis are made fresh by Citarella from their own unique recipes. Prime cuts of red meats and poultries are as abundant as gourmet sauces and seasonings. Add seasonal wonders like truffles to that list, and you've got one of the most complete gourmet markets around. Only Citarella's Rockefeller Center location offers a Citarella To Go, where you can not only order your groceries for an afternoon pick up, but grab a quick, made-to-order bite to eat.
If you're not hungry walking in—be prepared—you certainly will be as you walk out, arms full of satisfying goodies from one of the finest gourmets in the city. |
