Editorial Review

A.R.E. of New York Edgar Cayce Center is one of the few and certainly the most unique nonprofit holistic health institutes we've come across. They seem to defy common categorization, showing up as both a clinic and a medical spa in our databases, but encompass so much more than other wellness centers in the city. The Association for Research and Enlightenment of New York bases their work on the teachings of Edgar Cayce, a renown American Psychic and healer living from 1877 to 1945. Likened to Jung in many of his philosophies, the readings of Cayce provide a path beyond Western medicine's treatment of symptoms, toward treating the underlying causes of those symptoms through holistic health.

Known as the “father of holistic medicine,” Cayce gained much acclaim for his abilities to enter a deep meditative state through prayer and provide medical diagnoses for people all over the world. Despite being limited to an 8th grade education, Cayce had the ability to meditate and make in-depth and intelligible assessments in the varying realms of politics, finance, metaphysics, and technology. Though Woodrow Wilson often consulted Cayce for fiscal and political advice, and Thomas Edison collaborated closely with Cayce for the inspiration of several inventions, Edgar preferred to use his gift to help those in dire medical need.

Over the course of his life, he gave successful medical readings of over 14,000 people, providing largely holistic answers. Though in extreme cases and emergencies, Cayce was in full support of using Western medical techniques such as surgery and pharmaceuticals, he felt that chronic syndromes required a lifestyle change rather than a quick medical fix. In the early 1900s, Cayce was the first adamant proponent of drinking many glasses of water a day in combination with a highly fruit and vegetable based diet. He suggested diets lower in carbs and flour based foods, in favor of locally grown vegetables that endure the same environmental conditions as we do, as they could potentially help combat those conditions. One more reason to support your local organic market.

Cayce's readings have shown terrific success in treating chronic illnesses that cannot be cured by Western medicine. One example is psoriasis, a chronic skin condition that current medical science would claim to be incurable. Cayce made the assessment that it wasn't a skin condition at all, but a symptom of “leaky gut”—a condition in which the intestinal lining becomes unhealthy and thin, allowing excretory toxins to leak back into the blood stream. These toxins need to be expelled from the body, but because they cannot go through the excretory system, they are removed through the body's backup plan for cleansing—the sweat glands. According to Cayce, the excess of toxins flowing through the skin causes the painful, scaly lesions known as psoriasis. As is typically the case, Western medicine continues to treat the disease at the symptom level, rather than treating the ultimate cause. Cayce claimed that through lifestyle changes such as assessing dietary deficiencies, colonic cleansing, and maintaining a healthy spine, “leaky gut” can be eliminated, and so can psoriasis. “Leaky gut” has since been confirmed by medical researchers, albeit many years after Cayce's death, but they have yet to connect it with psoriasis.

A.R.E. Of New York offers a wide variety of services and resources in their nonprofit, largely volunteer-run facility. They offer Chiropractic Services, Acupuncture, Massage Therapy, Alexander Technique, Naturopathic and Homeopathic Therapy, Reiki, Reconnective Healing, Energy Healing, Psychic Readings, and Cayce-Reilly Massage, a technique developed by Cayce with renown therapist Dr. Harold Reilly to reduce toxins in the body.

In addition to these services, they also have a lending library with ample literature on life, spirituality, and medicine, including the entire volume of the readings of Edgar Cayce. These readings have been combined into treatment plans set forth by A.R.E. to provide the step-by-step dietary and lifestyle changes suggested by Cayce for the treatment of specific chronic conditions. They'll provide these references for your personal use, but are more than happy to work with you to help institute these treatments and monitor your progress. They also hold healing prayer groups, meditation courses, special workshops with renown healers from around the globe, and many other classes, groups, and meetings that can be found on our events calendar. If you're looking for answers, and your doctor responds with a lifetime prescription, maybe it's time you tried looking here.

A.R.E is one of the few places I have ever felt completely comfortable at. Not only are the people completely welcoming, but the facilities are first-rate for any venture.

I don't know if I'd call A.R.E. a "spa" though. They're a little more eclectic.
