Editorial Review

Making the decision to visit Pratima was easy; its Ayurvedic philosophy and pricing the main draws. For $170 I booked an Ayurvedic Facial and Shirodhara treatment. The facial was basic and impressive mainly because the products came from Pratima’s line of Ayurvedic skincare products.

Unfortunately, my aesthetician did not share much knowledge about the ayurvedic principles of the treatment or my particular ayurvedic type (pitta). Thankfully, a quick visit to their website was able to answer my questions.

Shirodhara was a nice change from the traditional Swedish massage: a full-frontal body massage, followed by warmed oil continuously poured over the third eye (forehead) and a scalp massage. The treatment touts stress relief, mental clarity and balancing of the nervous system.

My backside jealous from the front-only massage and my head a little disappointed with the scalp massage, the relaxing high from chanting music in the background was the most memorable part of the experience.

Fair warning: Shirodhara is a deep oil treatment for your hair. With no time to shower before jetting uptown, I spent the rest of the day dripping oil on the people around me. However post-shower my hair was glistening.

What to expect: the clinic and spa is small. Staff was pleasant, cheery, though lacked a formality typical of larger spas that left me feeling surprisingly less pampered. They are planning to move to a new location, which should give the environment a lift.

Highlights: traditional Ayurvedic treatments performed with homemade herbal infused oils; Rudrashka medicinal-bead energy treatment, for those looking for a truly peaceful spa experience.

Price: 1 hr Abhayanga massage $90, 1 hr ayurvedic facial $85, Rudrashka treatment (1 hr) $55.
