Editorial Review
With almost fifteen locations spread around the city and more popping up all the time, this California-inspired Mexican mini-chain is steadily taking over New York with its fresh ingredients, generous portions and fair pricing. Everything, from the six kinds of 13-inch tortillas to the free salsa, is made daily in a central kitchen and delivered to each location. Don’t overdose on the salsa verde, it deserves the warning on the menu.
Serving only brown rice with a choice of black, red, white, or refried beans and offering non-dairy alternatives to both the sour cream and shredded cheese, you can eat big on flavor and size (20 oz. burritos) without killing the diet. A sign on the wall confirms that no lard or pork products are used in the restaurant.
Clearly labeled Vegetarian options are many and flavorful, from the steamed spinach and mushroom “Lost in Austin” to the “Vegetarian Sloppy Joe Wrap,” which is a stretch as far as Mexican food is concerned, but still pleases with a tangy sauce and rewarding dollop of tofu sour cream. Sadly, the Soy Mole Burrito, which I ate religiously for months while living in the East Village, is no longer on the menu. We are channeling all of our mole energy in the hope that it will come back one day.
The Fajita Burrito, with tender grilled chicken breast and vegetables in a chili sauce, is a favorite while the chili and brown rice for $3.75 is a filling budget option. Tacos de carne asada are also a flavorful bargain at $3 a taco. Specials rotate frequently to keep the regulars happy on their frequent returns. Take heart homesick west-coasters, when was the last time you found Horchata in a fast-food restaurant in NYC?
Burritoville is the kind of fast-food restaurant that we hope to see spread around the country in the coming years. They have taken the best part of Mexican food, vibrant flavors, fresh ingredients and hand preparation, while removing the over-reliance on lard and meat often found in more authentic tacquerias.
We are waiting expectantly, but patiently for the web-based delivery system to get up and running but are comfortable ordering lunch in the office over the phone. On the bright side, with a never-ending supply of chips and salsa and clean copies of The Onion, why not grab a chair and stay for a while?
