Editorial Review

I recently ran across Pita Grill on my weekly walks down Second Avenue. With a glowing blue counter, garage-style door open to the night crowd, and a low-rider motorcycle in front, the décor definitely catches the eye of Village East moviegoers waiting for their shows to start. Opened recently at this location and competing with Viva Herbal Pizza, the awning proclaims that they are “Positively Healthy.” Succumbing to similar jargon in my own endeavors, they deserve the benefit of the doubt in my book. The food is international, and much of it clearly marked vegetarian, with a strong Mediterranean leaning and an Asian secondary tone, but it is as the garage door proclaims, a throwback to the fifties grills that used to be a requisite part of the movie date.

The eight-dollar falafel and hummus platter is a great value and the taboulleh was well made. I plan on going back for the four dollar Oven Roasted Asian Portobello Summer Roll. Meat eaters have many options, but the Chicken or Steak Rice bowls looked good, with chopped Arugula, Tomatoes and Green Onions tossed with brown rice, feta cheese, and red wine vinaigrette. The few times that I have eaten there, the service has been friendly and the place has been clean, two bonuses compared to most grills, tipping the balance with its large vegetarian menu. Good luck in your battle for free-delivery, vegetarian-friendly mini-chaindom.
