Editorial Review

Just below Washington Square Park, Quantum Leap is a home away from home for many West Village vegetarians. Recently relocated to 226 Thompson Street, this chill hangout spot greets you with jazz classics, a comforting, warm interior, and a warmer staff. Everyone gets treated like a regular here. No hurries, no worries, just good natural foods and healthy cooking. Their macrobiotic, vegetarian menu is a versatile blend of global styles with many assorted vegan and organic options throughout. No matter what your taste or diet, you'll find plenty of dishes to suit both.

Having lived in the West Village for almost two years, I sampled a number of dishes at Quantum Leap, but one that can't be ignored is their veggie burger. They have a wide variety of veggie patties composed of varying veggies, soy, nuts, grains, and lentils. Add salmon, tuna, and Mahi-Mahi burgers to that list and they somehow managed to fit 13 distinct burger meals onto the menu, all for around $6 with a good-sized side salad. It's a better selection than walking through the freezer section of your favorite whole foods market. Though there's not enough days in the week to try them all, I'd go so far as to say the ones I've tried are the best in the city. Even my non-vegetarian friends agreed that they might even be tastier than beef patties! On my last trip, I got one of the daily specials—a veggie burger with a terrific smoked flavor, topped with grilled portabello mushrooms, delicious soy bacon, sweet peppers and onions, with a side of pesto and a salad. All for $6! How can you go wrong?

But don't hold back—even the highest priced items hover around $10. On my first trip to Quantum Leap, the waiter recommended the Empress’ Choice, and i would in turn recommend it to you. The healthy-sized platter of lemongrass flavored seitan (wheat gluten) with shiitake mushrooms is served over brown rice and sautéed oriental vegetables with a spring roll on the side. But if you're into something with a little more kick, try the Seitan Satay ($6.95). The seitan skewers not only had the flavor and texture of chicken, but were drizzled in a spicy chili-peanut satay sauce that was just enough to perk your taste buds with spice and flavor without sending you running for water.

If you have some free time on the weekends, it's the perfect time to drop by for brunch. Saturdays and Sundays, brunch is served from 11am to 4pm. Organic eggs or scrambled tofu perfectly compliment soy links that could pass for pork sausage on any farm in America. For only $7.95 you can combo those with your choice of fluffy whole grain, organic buttermilk, buckwheat, and blue-corn pancakes or waffles served with Vermont maple syrup. I found it to be the perfect Sunday brunch to soak up many late Saturday nights.

If none of this interests you, round that selection out with a number of healthy Mexican dishes, soups, salads, Japanese fare, organic pasta, and there's something tasty and affordable here for everyone. And if you're a fish lover, try the broiled salmon fillet ($11.95). I recommend the teriyaki sauce, but lemon herb or garlic sauce make for a nice topping on the moist fillet, that manages to remain light and flaky.

If you're a local, or just want to feel like one, stop by Quantum Leap. A wide-variety of affordable options await you in this quaint West Village staple. All it takes is one trip, and it just might become a staple in your life too.

Vabulous Veggie Burger Posted by aroche on 3/4/05
I redeemed HealthyLiving's coupon last night at Quantum Leap and had one of the best meals i've ever had. They had a veggie burger special using their famously delicious v.burger topped with portabello mushrooms, roasted red peppers and pesto sauce. My friend and I both ordered it and we were both in heaven. My free fresh smoothie was the perfect ending.
