Editorial Review
Any burger joint that necessitates a “No Rollerblades Indoors” sign should tell you you’re not in McWendy’s world any more. In fact, when was the last time you rubbed elbows with anyone in the fast food sector that rolled in on anything but the four strained wheels of their SUV? So what is it that makes Better Burger better than other burgers? This quick, healthy version of the burger is brought to you by the owners of Josie's, the health food celebrity hot spot of the Upper West Side, where trends aren’t followed, they’re set. Fat trapping ovens keep the guilt factor down on their already lean ostrich patties, and extremely high quality beef burgers. Despite being around 97% lean beef, the burgers maintain a juiciness and real burger flavor that can't be found in competitors. Don't get me wrong, I love the power food at the Pump and the Energy Kitchen, but you can tell that the quality is just a step above, giving Better Burger the rightful claim to back up their name.
A number of vegetarian options reside on the menu, including soy burgers topped with soy cheese, organic smoothies, and creamy soy milkshakes. Their interesting array of tasty condiments are not only unique, but range from completely organic to no less than 87% organic ingredients. Their Karma Ketchup, blended with a hint of curry, is the perfect way to add some zest to an already exciting burger and relatively guiltless fries (boasting 2/3s less fat than fries at the fast food chains). And what better way to wash down some of the only organic, air baked fries in the city than with a a refreshing mango lemonade?
Making good on it's promise of better burgers, they have much more to offer. There's a selection of raw treats, and I certainly enjoyed their Popeye Loaf. Picture a slice of meatloaf, made out of ground chicken, Italian spices, and organic spinach and Parmesan. Who said healthy had to taste like cardboard? And served over a good portion of their daily veggie (which happened to be a delicious combo of stir-fried broccoli, zucchini, carrots and eggplant), I felt better walking out than I would have if I were waddling out of McWendy's. So walk or run—but remember to mind the sign—don’t roll your way through Better Burger NYC, the only burger joint where the customers in sweat pants just came off a run, not the couch. |
