	American Cancer Society Links Overweight to Additional Cancers Doctors have long said that being overweight causes heart disease and diabetes. In a study published recently in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers from the American Cancer Society reported findings from their study following 900,000 cancer-free people from 1982 to 1986. Controlling for known risks to cancer such as smoking, the researchers found that excess weight accounted for 14 percent of cancer in men and 20 percent in women. Earlier studies had linked excess weight to cancers of the breast, uterus, colon and rectum, kidney, esophagus and gall bladder. This study linked excess weight to cancers of the cervix and ovary, pancreas, liver, stomach, and prostate. With so many Americans already on a diet, developing a good strategy for encouraging weight loss might just be the magic bullet that cancer researchers have been striving so hard to find.
