Welcome to the annual BioDiversity Expo, held at the New York Marriot in Brooklyn. With hundreds of unique exhibits, lectures, and films, HealthyLivingNYC couldn’t help but take this educational and entertaining fieldtrip. From acupuncture and energy healing to vegan wear and healthy elixirs, this is just a small smattering of the natural and eco-friendly foods, products, and information we came across.

We knew we would be on our feet all day, so it was only natural to stop by the Earth shoe display. Their vegan line of shoes is based on Negative Heel ™ Technology. Danish Yoga master, Anne Kalso, came up with the idea for the original design on a walk down a Brazilian beach after noticing how her posture improved when she walked in the sand. The natural distribution of bodyweight and musculature in the foot prompted her heel to sink deeper into the sand than her toe.

A slightly elevated toe allows the leg to straighten, the hips to come forward and align with the spine, which in turn rolls your shoulders back to open your chest for easier breathing. You may remember Earth shoes from their popularity in the Bohemian revolution of the 60s. I wasn’t around for the protests, but I did wear a pair of my father’s vintage Earth shoes for a year in high school. Sometimes you’ve got to walk a mile in another man’s shoes. I’d have to say, it’s time for a comeback.

Who needs shoes to walk the Earth, when you’ve got a perfect bed of grass like this? No matter how laid back they are, something tells me that even the friendly people at the Hippocrates Health Institute wouldn’t appreciate us walking on their wheat grass. They run a holistic spa and health retreat in West Palm Beach that promotes a natural lifestyle including vegetarian and raw diets, and interconnectedness with the living world around us. And they make one heck of a shot of wheat grass!

In today’s world we no longer have the option to step away from the buzz of electronic equipment at work or play. Prolonged running of electronics can pump our daily habitats with a surplus of positive ions that cause our bodies to overproduce serotonin. This can lead to stress, headaches, and depression. These lamps are all unique pieces of salt mined from Himalayan foothills rich in negative ions. When heated by the light bulb they neutralize excessive ions and promote a relaxing environment.

Everything in the universe is constantly vibrating--every molecule in your body, your food, even in those sneakers you had written off as dead. Most of these vibrations collide with the molecules around them and cancel each other out. Crystals, on the other hand, have unique molecular structures that allow vibrations to build on one another to the point where the crystals actually radiate energy. Crystals are used around the world for everything from Feng Shui to healing and stress relief.

We certainly are creatures of habit. As these habits become lifestyles, they start to wear on our bodies. That strapping young man in the photo is the perfect example. I know because he’s me. One of my little habits is that I only sleep on my left side and end up tweaking my neck. After a quick scan for epidermal heat in my neck, this young chiropractor knew exactly how I slept and informed me which nerves and organs were suffering. So now I just have to change my lifestyle. Piece of cake.

With our tanks running on empty, we couldn’t help but notice how energetic everyone else was. Some of the Expositioners were in their 60s (they proudly shared their age, but certainly didn’t look it) and still glided around with the carefree energy of schoolchildren. What was their secret? The people at Young Living would swear by the Ningxia Wolfberry—more densely packed with antioxidants than any other superfood on the planet—perfect to fight aging and cancer causing free radicals.

The Wolfberry was delicious, but if you’re looking for something a little less potent, maybe you can start out with water. After all, 65% of the adult human body is made up of H2O. This pitcher by Nikken not only oxygenates the water through cyclone movement, but also magnetically rearranges the hydrogen bonds between the molecules creating a tighter formation. Cells don’t have to expend as much energy to uptake this clean water, and thus cleanse and rejuvenate with fresh water.

The BioDiversity Expo was certainly a wealth of information on topics ranging from Reiki to Acupuncture to altering the negative energy around us and preparing natural and antioxidant rich foods. But in staying true to the spirit of BioDiversity, along come the Amazon Herb Co. They spent years fighting lumber companies in Peru to secure the deed to the rainforest for the local tribes. They continue to save the land, and support sustainable agriculture for medicinal plants and herbs.
